Recognizing Youth and Adults from Our Diocese

On May 22, 2023 the CYM Office will host the 19th Recognition Dinner to honor adults and young people who have made a significant contribution to youth ministry within their parish or Catholic school.

The dinner will be at the Executive Banquet and Conference Center in Newark with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Soon Reservations can be made online prior to May 12th to join us in recognizing the award winners that exhibit Christian leadership in their parish or Catholic school.

The CYM Office offers our prayers for the award recipients, their families, school, parishes, and our whole Diocese.  We look forward to celebrate together in person this year!

CYM Annual Recognition Dinner Award Nomination Forms Are Now Open!

Now in its fourteenth year, the CYM Annual Recognition Dinner shines a light on the best and the brightest leaders in youth ministry. Who will you nominate or name as award winners from your parish? All nominations and submissions for the annual recognition dinner are due to the CYM office by April 4, 2018.

The ARD allows parishes or schools to name one Volunteer of the Year to recognize anyone 21 years or older and cleared for service in the diocese and who is an outstanding volunteer with young people. This person could be a chaperone, a catechist, a Confirmation leader, or even someone who helps keep the website up to date. This is not a nomination. The person named will receive the award. Each parish/school is challenged to name the person most deserving.

The St. Timothy National Youth Award is given to up to two young people who are a junior or senior high school youth from each parish or school. It is the highest recognition from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and CYM. Name one or two young people who live as disciples of Christ, sets a positive example for other youth, witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity, demonstrates Gospel values through service to others, and exhibits Christian leadership in parish, school, and/or community settings. This is not a nomination. The person named will receive the award.

There are several categories for the St. John Bosco Diocesan Award for outstanding service to young people in our diocese. Nominees must be 21 years or older and cleared for service in the diocese. Those who have ministered more than five years are eligible. Categories include ministry in a parish or diocesan youth ministry, a school, in justice and service, by a clergy or religious, in athletics, in catechesis, by a leader in Girl or Boy Scouts, to young adults, and in a multi-cultural setting. Indivduals are nomintaed for this award and winners will be announced after April 4, 2018.

There are also several categories for the Companions on the Journey National Award, given by the NFCYM and CYM. Those in ministry for more than three years in any of the following categories are eligible: athletics, catechesis, Boy or Girl Scouts, in justice and service, in parish youth ministry, and to young adults. Indivduals are nomintaed for this award and winners will be announced after April 4, 2018.

For complete details, visit the event page. All submissions and nominations are due online by April 4, 2018. Tickets for the dinner must be ordered by April 27, 2018. Reservations are $35 per person or $315 for a table of 10.

September 11th Prayer

Please take a moment to remember those people who lost their lives and those families who were affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

So we pray:

O God, our hope and our refuge, in our distress we come quickly to you. Shock and horror of that tragic day have subsided, replaced now with emptiness, and a longing for an innocence lost. We remember those who lost their lives in New York, Washington D.C., And Pennsylvania.

We are mindful of the sacrifice of our police, fireman, and all rescue workers, who demonstrated that day, the greatest love of all by laying down their lives for others. We commit their souls to your eternal care and celebrate the gift of their lives. We remember them and hope not in ourselves, but in you, resolving that justice not revenge, prevail in our world.

Let us resolve that in the face of hatred, we will show love. That in times of despair, we will be voices of hope and creators of new dreams. That in times of darkness we will be sources of light. Let us resolve that we never regard forgiveness as weakness, but rather as a source of strength in our lives and in our world. And let us honor the memory of the 3000 individuals who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

With your help Lord Jesus, may we truly live this way so you may be glorified and your love made known to others through us.

Amen

World Youth Day 2016: Are You Interested?

World Youth Day 2016

Pope John Paul II announced the institution of World Youth Day in December, 1985, as an annual gathering of youth and young adults for prayer, worship and celebration of the Catholic faith.  The event is observed annually in dioceses and every two to three years at an international gathering.

The Diocese of Wilmington has sent delegates to World Youth Day in Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), and Madrid (2011). We did not participate in WYD in Rio in 2013.

To gauge interest in WYD 2016, we have prepared a short survey. It is anticipated that a trip of this magnitude could cost up to $4,000 (inclusive of airfare, hotel, registration, etc.). To be honest, until we know how many people are participating, we will not be able to put a trip together.

Since WYD will be held in Europe, the target audience will be young adults. Therefore, no one who is under the age of 16 on July 1, 2016 will be permitted to attend unless a parent accompanies them. No single delegates (traveling without a minor child) over the age of 39 on July 1, 2016 (with the exception of clergy, religious, or designated chaperones) will be permitted to attend. Why? Because this is a pilgrimage for young people, not a guided tour.

You are encouraged to follow the links below to read more about World Youth Day and its rich history.

To begin the survey, please click here. The survey will close December 1, 2014.

Host the Pilgrimage Cross

Parishes and schools are encouraged to have young people carry the cross into parish or school liturgies as a witness to our responsibility to share this symbol of Christ’s love. You may also wish to have the cross present during retreats as a part of prayer space, to use it as part of a prepared prayer service, or to be creative and think of your own ways to utilize the cross in your ministry. Remember that it is a diocesan cross, so in time, thousands of young people will have carried it, prayed before it, and been inspired by it.

Use the Hosting the Cross resource to plan your experience with the cross and to answer any questions you might have. Use the Resource Packet for suggested prayers and activities.

To request the Cross, use this form.

To see where the Cross is around the diocese, visit this page.

P&B: Salisbury or Cambridge?

In John 13, Jesus does something extraordinary. He, the Master and Teacher, washes the feet of his followers. Now, it’s your turn. There are people in our diocese in need. There are homes to be painted, walls to be built, weeds to be pulled, fences to be mended. You are invited to serve as Jesus did. You are invited to make a difference in the lives of those who live down the road, around the corner, and next door.

You are invited to wash feet.

There are two weeks to serve but only one way to register: online.

This year, payment for the week has also been moved online and is due at the time of online registration.

If you have questions, please call 302-658-3800 or email CYM

Deadline Extended for ARD Nominations

It is time to recognize your adult leaders and outstanding young people. Talk to your team and complete the forms soon.

To begin the process of recognizing your local youth ministers, please click the related page below. We've also included Volunteer Compentencies that might interest you as you try to determine which volunteers stand out among the rest.

Five Ways to Help Newtown, CT

The little village of Newtown, Connecticut, now known the world over, is just about 200 miles from the CYM offices.

While it is not a long drive, the people of Newtown have enough going on. The media is still camped out in parking lots and side streets. The school is still an active crime scene. Families are gathering for funerals. Strangers are coming there to pay their respects.

It would be tempting to get in the car and see how we could help.

But our place is here, with our families and those we love.

Still, we long to help. To do something.

So we are offering these suggestions, culled from conversations with local church officials at St. Rose of Lima in Newtown and from around the Internet.

  1. Pray the Rosary together as a family. This is the first request given to anyone who calls St. Rose of Lima Church (who isn't a reporter).
  2. Observe a moment of silence. The governor of Connecticut has called on all other governors to observe a moment of silence in their respective states. In Delaware, bells will toll 26 times across the state beginning at 9:30 am Friday, December 21. The CYM staff and the rest of the diocesan offices will gather together at that time in prayer. Perhaps your parish or school could consider doing the same. Read the governor's invitation online for Delaware. We have not been able to find a statement from Maryland's governor, but even without the direct invitation, we encourage parishes and schools in Maryland to join with so many others at 9:30 Friday morning.
  3. Snowflakes for Sandy Hook: Please help the students of Sandy Hook have a winter wonderland at their new school! Get Creative!! No two snowflakes are alike. Make and send snowflakes to Connecticut PTSA, 60 Connolly Parkway, Building 12, Suite 103, Hamden, CT 06514, by January 12, 2013.
  4. Cards and Coins for Sandy Hook: Students can collect spare change to support their peers at Sandy Hook. Please send contributions to “Connecticut PTSA Sandy Hook Fund” by February 14, 2013. The U.S. Postal Service has set up a post office box for the public to send its condolences to Newtown. You can send letters and cards to P.O. Box 3700, Newtown, CT 06470.
  5. Donate to Sandy Hook Families. There are countless foundations set up, charities collecting money, and people asking for donations. Sadly, not all of these are actual charities and not all the funds collected will reach those in needs. Our suggestion is that you give directly to the parish. Click here to go to the parish website and donate online.

2016 Diocesan Vocations Guild Vocations Drawing Contest

The Diocesan Vocations Guild is holding its annual drawing contest for children in grades 1 - 4 in order to foster possible future vocations and affirm the priests, religious and deacons who have had a positive influence on our children's lives.

Each grade has a different theme to draw and teachers and catechists will select one drawing from each grade to be submitted to the Office of Communications before December 9, 2016.

Drawings can be done during Vocations Awareness Week (November 6-12, 2016) or at anytime that is convenient for the teacher as long as drawings are submitted before the deadline. We encourage teachers to share all the drawings with the priests, deacons and religious in their
parishes and to display them for the school and parish community to enjoy.

Please contact Bob Krebs at 302-573-3116 or at rkrebs@cdow.org for questions.

V Encuentro

V Encuentro is a process of ecclesial reflection and action that invites all Catholics in the United States to intense missionary activity, consultation, leadership development, and identification of best ministerial practices in the spirit of the New Evangelization.

The main goal of the V Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church in the United States can better respond to the Hispanic/Latino presence, and to strengthen the ways in which Hispanics/Latinos respond to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire Church.

Participants are all leaders in dioceses, parishes, lay ecclesial movements and other Catholic organizations and institutions are invited to participate by encountering Hispanic/Latino Catholics, particularly those living in the periphery through the missionary process of evangelization and consultation. Pastors are asked to submit the names of the members of their parish teams by November 17, 2016. The list of team members needs to be submitted to the Office of Hispanic Ministry.

2015 Saint George Trek: Apply Today

The St. George Trek is a high adventure leadership program (offered every other year) for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members at Philmont Scout Ranch. Designed to develop organizational and relational skills for leadership, as well as nourishing the scout's spirituality, the program brings together Catholic high school youth from around the country together with selected priests, religious and seminarians for eleven days of backpacking on the trail including three days of intensive leadership training at a back-country base camp.

The 2015 Saint George Trek begins on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where the participants meet, get to know one another, train, have fun and pray. Then it's off to Philmont Scout Ranch where they will hike the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains. While hiking, they will experience a program that is designed to encourage the integration of morality, values, spirituality, faith and scripture in their lives as young Catholic men and women. Before returning home on Thursday, July 23, 2015, they will be asked to commit themselves to bring what they have experienced home to their respective dioceses, so they can become effective peer leaders and role models for their fellow scouts.

Each Arch/diocese is encouraged to conduct a search and nominate one or two Boy Scouts or Venture Crew members for participation in the Trek.  Selection of participants will be made on the basis of demonstrated maturity, physical ability, leadership potential, an interest the life of the Church and an openness to the discernment of vocation.  The earning of Scouting's Religious Emblems and involvement in church, school and scouting activities should be given consideration.  Candidates should be emotionally mature adolescents who will be fifteen years of age on or before July 1, 2015, in high school in the fall of 2015 and committed to assist their Catholic Committee when they return home. They must also have the physical health and stamina to backpack on the mountain trails of Philmont.

The Diocese of Wilmington Catholic Committee on Scouting is currently accepting nominations from scouts interested in attending the 2015 St. George Trek. So, if you know of any older scout who may be interested in the 2015 St. George Trek, please provide them with a copy of the Info Sheet and Application Form.  The application deadline is October 15, 2014.

The Diocese of Wilmington Office of Catholic Youth & Young Adult Ministry will cover the $750 Participant Fee for up to two (2) scouts to attend the trek from the Diocese of Wilmington.  Please realize that this covers only a portion of the total trip costs.  Candidates selected to attend the 2015 St. George Trek will be responsible for all other fees and related costs (e.g., transportation to and from Albuquerque, New Mexico; personal gear; normal personal expenses).

The Beloit Mindset List: 55 Things That Have Always Been True for the Class of 2018

Incoming college freshmen were generally born in the year 1996. They have never known a time without cloning, female NBA referees, or a unified Bosnia-Herzegovina. Published every year, the Beloit Mindset List provides light-hearted, humorous commentary on the way incoming college freshmen perceive the world. Although it began as a way for Beloit College faculty to avoid dated references and stay in touch with students, the Beloit College Mindset List now sheds light on the way each new generation views subjects such as politics, pop culture, and science. Pope Francis to Young People: “Think Big!”

Young People: Think Big

The Holy See published Pope Francis’ message for the 29th World Youth Day (WYD), which will take place on Palm Sunday, April 13. The theme for this year’s event is based on an excerpt from the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. World Youth Day, which was initiated by Blessed John Paul II in 1984, is celebrated annually on a diocesan level and internationally every two to three years.

The Holy Father began his message by reflecting on the Beatitudes, which he said were “new and revolutionary” in presenting “a model of happiness contrary to what is usually communicated by the media and by the prevailing wisdom.”

“Young Christians are therefore called to conversion, to embrace an evangelical lifestyle, one of moderation in which we seek the essential and act in solidarity with the poor,” the communique stated. “The Pope explains that the poor are both the 'suffering flesh' of Christ that we are all called to personally touch, and they are also true masters of life, often with much to offer on the human and spiritual plane.”

“A worldly way of thinking finds it scandalous that God became one of us and died on a cross! According to the logic of this world, those whom Jesus proclaimed blessed are regarded as useless, 'losers.' What is glorified is success at any cost, affluence, the arrogance of power and self-affirmation at the expense of others,” he wrote.

The Pope went on to call on the youth of the world to resist the enticements that present a false illusion of happiness. In doing so, one risks settling for less and “thinking small," he said.

“Think big instead! Open your hearts!” the Pope wrote.

Co-sponsored by Catholic Relief Services and NACYML, Called to Witness is a short-term, firsthand experience of the developing world.

It is not a direct service program, but rather an opportunity based in solidarity and accompaniment, which includes a chance to visit a variety of CRS programs, and explore deeply what it means to live faith in solidarity with our sisters and brothers overseas. It is an experience grounded in a spiritual context of shared reflection on Catholic social teaching and specific teachings on global solidarity.

Applicants should be youth ministry leaders/professionals serving in some capacity in the Catholic youth ministry field in the United States. Applications may be downloaded online. The application deadline has been extended to February 20, 2014. (No money is due with the application.) The number of participants is limited. Preference is given to NACYML members who meet the other qualifications.

Accepted applicants will be asked for a $1,000.00 contribution and to develop a global solidarity action plan for implementation in his/her ministry setting after the experience. For more information (and assistance on how to raise the money), please contact Ted Miles at 410-951-7475.

By the way, CYM director Patrick Donovan has travelled twice with CRS CTW program if you have any questions.

Subscribing through CYM saves you 20%, so act today.

To Renew

Subscribing through CYM means that CYM pays the bill and you pay CYM, saving 20%. Instead of paying $225/year for high school and middle school, you only pay $180/year.

To renew and avoid a delay in your subsription, please submit your check to CYM no later than December 1, 2013. All parishes and schools that subscribe through CYM renew at the same time, so you can ignore the renewal notices sent automatically from CMD.

We Are All Youth Ministers

On April 19, 2012, CYM staff and 344 youth, young adults, and adults gathered to give thanks and recognition for the giftedness of dozens of youth ministers. The scripts are now online for you to share with your parishes, schools, and families.

We are so proud of all our youth ministry leaders and the 18 young people we honored with the St. Timothy National Award. Mark you calendar for next year's event and get ready to participate in CYM's call to complete 80,000 hours of community service in the coming months.

We are all youth ministers! We share the common call, rooted in Baptism, to remember that there is one truth: Jesus is alive. And there is one command: Love one another!

For a complete list of winners this year, please visit the Forum.

May God bless our honorees!
