Hurricane Katrina Response
Disciples Now Ministries and Saint Mary's Press have launched Cards of Care as a national youth response to Hurricane Katrina. What is Cards of Care? Catholic young people, ages 11-18, are invited to collect gift cards redeemable at national retailers with a strong presence in the hurricane affected areas. These are stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, drug stores, gas stations, and grocery stores to directly assist those affected by the disaster. For more information, click here.

Foster Parents Needed
The Delaware Children's Department is looking for families with room in their hearts and homes for a child in foster care. Foster parents can be single or married and can live in an apartment or house. Foster parents care for a child while help is given to the child's family. While most children go home to their parents or their larger families, those who cannot safely return home, foster parents care for the child until a permanent home is found. Sometimes foster parents become the child's adoptive parent. If you can provide a future with hope to a child or youth in foster care, please call the Delaware Helpline at 1-800-464-HELP for more information.

Coaches Training: A Must for Coaches

CYM is pleased to announce the reintroduction of face-to-face Coaches Training for the 2005-2006 program year. These sessions will permit all adult leaders in CYM athletics the opportunity to gain insights into the values at the core of the CYM sports experience and will provide tips on ways to be a positive coach. In addition, the training will afford an opportunity for coaches to become more familiar with their requirements with regard to the diocese’s child protection program, For the Sake of God’s Children (FSGC). CYM is pleased to welcome Jack Holloway, a legend in the Delaware sports community, as the keynote presenter for these sessions. Please note: this training is required once every three years. All CYM coaches must attend a training session in fall 2005 or spring 2006. To download a flyer for the fall sessions, click here.

Youth Ministry Leadership Team

The Office for Catholic Youth Ministry invites each parish and Catholic high school to appoint two juniors or seniors (or one of each) to serve as representatives on the YLT for a minimum of one year. New council members are expected to attend their first meeting in November. Ideally, council members are incoming juniors and are able to serve for two years. Sometimes a parish or high school asks if they can have a mature sophomore on the Team and while this is allowed, it is not preferred. For complete information and to download an application, please click here

Fall Formation Day
Adult leaders in youth ministry are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Formation Day on Saturday, 11/12. All sessions are open to any participant, but adults who minister to and with young people in a youth ministry setting are particularly encouraged to consider attending either the session on Retreat Planning (presented by Debbie McDonald, Executive Director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Washington) or Cutting, Self Mutilation, and Self-Destructive Behaviors (presented by Coleen O’Connor, Program Coordinator at First State School, a nationally certified counselor who serves as chair of the CYM Advisory Board). For complete details, click here.

Champion of the Poor

On September 27, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, patron saint of all works of charity. Vincent dedicated his life to caring for the sick and the poor. He established religious orders for both men and women to help him with this work. Vincent saw caring for the sick and poor as a continuation of prayer and time spent with God. Quick Quiz
Would you believe nobody got the answer correct last issue? The question, Who was the first Native American canonized a saint? fielded more responses than any other question. But everyone answered Kateri Teckakwitha. Sorry folks, Kateri isn't a saint...yet! The first indigenous (truly native) person canonized was Juan Diego.
