Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, and Earthquakes
On October 1, Tropical Storm Stan made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico bringing with it heavy rains resulting in severe flooding and landslides throughout El Salvador, Guatemala, southern Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras. In Guatemala, the rains caused massive mudslides and flooding along the Pacific Coast and in the Southwest region, especially the Departments of Jutiapa, Jalapa, Santa Rosa, Escuintla, Retalhuleu, Suchiepéquez, and San Marcos.

On October 8, an earthquake hit South Asia. According to news reports, officials in the worst-hit areas of Pakistani Kashmir and the North West Frontier Province said may have claimed up to 40,000 lives. Another 2,000 people are feared to have been killed across the border in Indian Kashmir.

Coaches Training: A Must for Coaches

The first coaches training was held Wednesday, October 12th to rave reviews. The next session is scheduled for November 9th. These sessions will permit all adult leaders in CYM athletics the opportunity to gain insights into the values at the core of the CYM sports experience and will provide tips on ways to be a positive coach. Keynote presenter is Jack Holloway, a legend in the Delaware sports community. Please note: this training is required once every three years. All CYM coaches must attend a training session in fall 2005 or spring 2006. To download a flyer for the fall sessions, click here.

Youth Ministry Leadership Team

We've only heard from a few parishes! Please accept CYM's invitation to each parish and Catholic high school to appoint two juniors or seniors (or one of each) to serve as representatives on the YLT for a minimum of one year. New council members are expected to attend their first meeting in November. For complete information and to download an application, please click here

Fall Formation Day
Adult leaders in youth ministry are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Formation Day on Saturday, 11/12. All sessions are open to any participant, but adults who minister to and with young people in a youth ministry setting are particularly encouraged to consider attending either the session on Retreat Planning (presented by Debbie McDonald, Executive Director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Washington) or Cutting, Self Mutilation, and Self-Destructive Behaviors (presented by Coleen O’Connor, Program Coordinator at First State School and a nationally certified counselor. Have you ever argued with a referee?

If so, now is you chance to really get involved. The Office for Catholic Youth Ministry is looking for adults (young adults and those more seasoned) who are interested in becoming basketball officials. Training will be held Sunday evenings in November. Officials work from two to four games per weekend; pay varies according to experience. If you are interested, please call the CYM office at 658-3800 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and send an email.

Online Glitch Sends Test Email

If you've registered your child via the online system CYM uses for athletics, you probably received an email with some pretty bizarre text. The message was 'zzzzz' and wasn't a virus. Instead of sending a test message to one new account, our web gurus accidentally sent it to all 8,000+ users. We are so sorry for the inconvenience.
