In-service: If you work with kids (or live
with kids), you should attend!
Catholic Youth Ministry will host an
in-service on the National Study of Youth
and Religion on Friday, March 24, 2006 at
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Bear, DE. The
cost is $10/person, which includes lunch and
supplies. You can access a brochure
here. All are
encouraged to attend and to consider
sending one or two individuals from your
school or Religious Education staff, especially a junior high or high
school religion teacher or catechist. Credit for this
workshop will be offered through the Office
for Religious Education. Registration is now
open. For more information click
here.
The National Study of Youth and Religion was
based on a random telephone survey of 3,370
teenagers and their parents in all states
and follow-up personal interviews with 267
of the teen respondents in 45 states. Since
23% of all respondents were Catholic (and
25% of all teens in the U.S. are Catholic),
the Catholic data was extrapolated from the
results and will be the subject of our
discussion on March 24th.
The in-service will help youth ministry
leaders, religious educators, principals,
priests, and parents unpack the data and its
implications for how we minister to, with
and for young people. For the first time, we
have a chance to look at what young
Catholics are saying about their faith
experience, how they view their parish life,
and the influence their parents have on
them. In addition, we have the chance to see
what parents are saying about how their
faith experience helps or hinders their
children’s involvement in Church.
The study outlines some serious challenges
that those who work with young people face.
The statistics on teenage sexuality, for
instance, may change the way we teach our
young people. The fact that the survey
concludes that religious education in this
country is failing – if by religious
education we mean helping young people
understand what they believe – has dramatic
implications for the way we catechize youth.
