Hurricane Katrina

Saint Mary’s Press is pleased to offer the following resources for young people to process the events in the Gulf Coast region. A catechetical article, When a Natural Disaster Strikes, A Listening Session for Teens, A Family-based prayer service, and Two prayer services: In times of Crisis and When Hope is Needed. Disciples Now Cards of Care - This Disciples Now initiative, Cards Of Care, invites middle and high school youth to begin a gift card collection campaign in their local communities. Cards collected during the campaign will be forwarded for distribution in hurricane affected areas. This is an opportunity for Catholic young people to advocate for and act on behalf of those devastated by Katrina. It is a simple and tangible response to the Gospel call to justice and social action. [Adult Leaders, download a flyer here.]

Helping Children Handle Disaster-Related Anxiety - This article from the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) offers quick tips to help parents comfort and reassure children with disaster-related anxiety.

Hurricane Katrina: Catholic Charities Responds - This link explains the short-term and long-term plans Catholic Charities are making to help with the hurricane Katrina disaster.

NASP Handout for Helping Children Cope with Disaster - This handout is designed to help parents and children during a disaster.

Red Cross Katrina Site - This link offers information about donating goods to the Red Cross specifically for areas impacted by hurricane Katrina.

National Catholic Youth Conference: Winds of Change
Some spaces still remain in the diocesan delegation! Please visit the CYM Upcoming Events webpage and download all the necessary information. Please note that full payment for participants is due by 9/15. Regarding notarization of NFCYM NCYC Form G: notary services will be available at the NCYC delegation meeting to be held in October. NCYC attendees, their parents, and other chaperones will be strongly encouraged to attend the meeting and may have NCYC participant forms notarized at that time. Adult Leaders: Please complete the registration process today!

 

Fall Formation Day
Adult leaders in youth ministry are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Formation Day on Saturday, 11/12. All sessions are open to any participant, but adults who minister to and with young people in a youth ministry setting are particularly encouraged to consider attending either the session on Retreat Planning (presented by Debbie McDonald, Executive Director of the Office of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Washington) or Cutting, Self Mutilation, and Self-Destructive Behaviors (presented by Coleen O’Connor, Program Coordinator at First State School, a nationally certified counselor who serves as chair of the CYM Advisory Board). Children of the Summer

Congratulations to Robyn and Len Correale on the birth of their daughter, Sophia Grace and to Alison and Jude Szczerba, on the birth of their daughter, Anna Lucia. Robyn and Alison serve two of our parishes, St. Mary of the Assumption and St. Mary Magdalen, respectively, as Coordinators of Youth Ministry. May God continue to bless your families!
