Welcome (back) to Ladders Online!

Ladders Online, the virtual newsletter from Catholic Youth Ministry has a new look! The column at the right will give you the highlights of each issue. The links at the bottom will help you submit content, see our vendors, and even unsubscribe (in the unlikely event that should occur).

If you are receiving Ladders Online for the first time, don't rush to take your name off the list. As of this issue, we've added all CYM Athletic Personnel and other youth ministry volunteers to the Ladders distribution list. In all, more than 1,700 adult leaders from around the diocese (and even around the world) receive this publication. Over the past three years, this newsletter has become the major source of information for youth ministry leaders, and has helped adult leaders from around the diocese stay connected. Now it will serve as the major source of information for tournaments and other parish sponsored/CYM sponsored athletic events.

So welcome to Ladders Online. We hope you like it!

Africa Bound

CYM's Anthony Albence and Patrick Donovan depart Friday, September 10th for Rwanda to travel with a delegation of youth ministry leaders from around the country with Catholic Relief Services' Called to Witness program.

While in Rwanda, the group of 8 will visit CRS programs and projects that have helped Rwandans in their struggle against AIDS and especially in the post-genocide years as they have come to grips with the reconciliation required for healing.

A Blessing of Travelers will be held in the chapel on the second floor of the 1626 N. Union Street Building (upstairs from CYM) on Thursday, September 9th at 9:30 a.m. All are invited to join in blessing Anthony and Patrick as they prepare for their journey.

Hey Coach! Positive Differences You Can Make...

"Hey, Coach! Positive Differences You Can Make for Young People in Sports:
An Asset-Builder's Guide to Common Coaching Strategies" is now available from the Search Institute.

Beyond the fundamentals, the drills, the playbook strategies, the starting line-up, and the final scores, a coach does more than teach sport's skills. A coach teaches life skills. Hey, Coach! is an in-the-gym, on-the-field collection of lifelike youth sports situations with asset-based guidance to help coaches handle common challenges in positive, creative ways. Written in a startlingly realistic style, coaches will wonder if the author snuck into their gym with a tape recorder to offer practical advice for situations like:

  • What to do if two of your players got into a fight?
  • What to do if there were no fans in the stands?
  • What to do if your male athletes put down females’ athletic abilities?
  • What to do if you wanted to raise the academic level of your athletes?
