Remembering Joe Opatowski

Last week's special edition of Ladders Online informed folks of the tragic loss of the Nexus 2004 keynote presenter, Joe Opatowski, who was killed October 29th in a car accident following a speaking engagement. For more information, visit www.freethechildren.org or read the article in the Toronto Star about Joe's death and his two trips to Wilmington. May your soul rest in peace, Joe. Thanks for giving so much.

Commemorate World AIDS Day, December 1st
World AIDS Day is being commemorated on Wednesday, December 1st. This year's theme, "Women, Girls and HIV/AIDS" focuses on the dramatic effect HIV/AIDS is having particularly on women and girls worldwide. Globally, women and girls are bearing the brunt of this disease since they are most likely to care for the ill, lose their livelihoods and access to education as well as face stigma and discrimination. UNAIDS estimates that women accounted for nearly 50% of all people living with HIV worldwide and for 57% in sub-Saharan Africa.

CRS urges the Catholic community to remember the 38 million people around the world living with this disease and the 20 million people this disease has killed since the virus was first discovered in 1981. For resources that you can use to mark World AIDS Day in your classroom or youth group, visit http://www.catholicrelief.org/grassroots.cfm.

New and Improved Diocesan Website Debuts

If you haven't checked out the diocesan website lately, visit www.cdow.org and see how it looks. While all the pages for Youth and Young Adults aren't updated, you can at least get a feel for what's in store. It's easier to navigate, has clearer links to help you find what you need more quickly and...coming soon...we'll be adding a page for young people in the diocese to find their local youth ministry contact person with just a click of a button. Of course this new page will require some work from the leaders, so be on the look out for the questionnaire coming soon to a mailbox (or inbox) near you.

Eucharistic Congress Announced

in keeping with our Holy Father's charge to spend this Year of the Eucharist meditating on the Blessed Sacrament, Bishop Saltarelli has requested a Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. The Congress will be held on October 29, 2005. All CYM activities (and sports) will be suspended for that day. Please keep this in mind while planning. And in case you're wondering, yes, the committee planning the big event knew that this was also the weekend for the National Catholic Youth Conference in Atlanta, GA. Due to the limit of site availability, this date had to be chosen for the EC. A large delegation will still attend NCYC and CYM staff will spend some time in the coming months learning the art of bi-location.

CYM and the United Way

With all the news stories this week about the 18% reduction in funding by United Way many people have asked, "Are we affected?" CYM enjoys funding from United Way in two ways: the first is through direct designations by people who contribute to United Way (using agency code 0180). The second source of funding is the Community Impact Fund, which supports our efforts towards Youth at Risk. This year the money was earmarked for Crisis Response Training and the construction of a Pastoral Cross that would travel the diocese on those sad occasions when a young person dies. That is the funding now in jeopardy. If your workplace has a United Way Campaign still going on, consider contributing to Catholic Youth Ministry (agency code 0180). If your office doesn't host a United Way Campaign, consider donating directly to CYM, 1626 N. Union Street, Wilmington, DE  19806. For the latest brochure of our programs and services, click here.

Looking for a Tournament?
Then visit the Tournament Time webpage for the latest in parish and/or CYM sponsored tournaments and clinics. Use that page to submit your own information as well.

Theology on Tap
Theology on Tap
is back for Fall/Advent 2004.
For a complete list of speakers, a flyer and more information, please visit the Theology on Tap link on the diocesan website.

Seen a Good Movie Lately?
If you've seen a movie that moves you to share it's story, let CYM know. We're putting together an online list of clips and movie guides and we'd love to take credit for your ideas (just kidding...we'll list the contributors). Please email your thoughts to CYM.

Sponsoring Ministry Off Site?
The checklist you need is now available to ensure that your off site location meets the requirements outlined by For the Sake of God's Children. You can download the list on the CYM Policies page.

Quick Quiz
Okay, this one is easy. Who is the patron saint of the Diocese of Wilmington? To make it harder, tell us where this saint served as bishop? Be the first to email CYM with the correct answer to win.

Key Chains Anyone?
If you have new drivers in your parish or school, don't forget to let CYM know. We'll send you key chains and a card from Bishop Saltarelli. Blessing the key chains and distributing them at Sunday Mass is a great way to reach out to all the teen drivers in your parish or school community. We'll even provide the blessing!

ID Tags Now Available

If you have your background check completed and are a CYM coach or youth ministry volunteer, an ID Tag is available to you. It's simply a hard, plastic name tag (complete with lanyard) that hangs around your neck and lets the parents and guardians of parents know you've received a verified criminal background check. These will be sent to AAPs for current coaches in time for the Winter 2004 season and are available by request for other volunteers. They'll be required for coaches and are a great idea for all involved. Remember, though, signing the covenant and any additional training are still the responsibility of the parish leadership. .

Young Adult Update

An Advent Retreat for young adults will be offered on Sunday, 12/19, from 2:00pm-6:00pm at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston, PA, just north of Wilmington. The theme of the retreat is: What If God Was One of Us: The Challenge of Christmas. This Advent retreat will focus on the implications of the Incarnation. Experienced young adult retreat facilitator Fr. Jack Kolodziej, OSFS, will direct an innovative afternoon of reflection and prayer that will creatively integrate modern film and music into the experience.  For more info on all of these programs, check out the Young Adult webpage.
