Habemus Papam

Sure, it's yesterday's news, but it's still good news. Check out the Saint Mary's Press website for prayer services and classroom ideas for welcoming Pope Benedict XVI with your young people. To make printing easier, find the "Printer-friendly view" link at the bottom of each resource!

The Forgotten Crisis
"We were robbed, and some have been killed," recalled Fatoma, a Sudanese woman currently living in the Ardmata refugee camp. "They took our animals and all of our maize." Fatoma's story is not unique. Thousands of refugees living in the camps in western Sudan and Chad tell of similar stories of the attacks by government troops and allied militia, the aftermath of family separation, looting and burning of property, deliberate killing of civilians, rape and kidnapping of women, and a dangerous, arduous journey to the border.

According to most estimates more than 300,000 have died, more than 2.4 million are homeless and at least 2.6 million people are affected by the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan.

With the signing of a peace agreement in January 2005, Sudan has ended 21 years of conflict, Africa's longest running civil war. The road to recovery, self-sufficiency and meaningful peace in an area absolutely devastated by war will be a long one. Unlike the tsunami, stories of the devastation wrought by civil strife in Darfur do not get media attention. Many people remain unaware of this on-going crisis.

Noticia del Encuentro 2006: Tejiendo el Futuro Juntos

The first National Encuentro is designed to bring Hispanic Catholic young people to more active, enthusiastic, and influential participation in the life and mission of the church in the United States. It is a first and necessary step in helping the church as a whole to understand, embrace, and affirm the unique cultural identity, reality, and gifts of Hispanic youth and young adults. The national gathering, scheduled for June 8-11, 2006, will be held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Parish, diocesan, and regional Encuentros (leading up to the national event) will take place from May of this year through mid-2006. The process is being convened by the National Catholic Network de Pastoral Juvenil Hispana in collaboration with the national leadership in Hispanic, youth, and young adult ministry. The theme is Weaving the Future Together. The Encuentro manual is available via the USCCB website in English and Spanish.

Quotable

"I am particularly thinking of young people. To them, the privileged interlocutors of John Paul II, I send an affectionate embrace in the hope, God willing, of meeting them at Cologne on the occasion of the next World Youth Day. With you, dear young people, I will continue to maintain a dialogue, listening to your expectations in an attempt to help you meet ever more profoundly the living, ever young, Christ. ~Pope Benedict XVI

Quick Quiz
Congrats to Vanessa Vavala of Padua Academy who correctly identified Pope Urban (18 days) and Pope Stephen II (15 days) as those popes who had reigns shorter than Pope John Paul I's reign. This week, another pope question: What's the new pope's middle name? Be the first to email CYM with the correct answer to win. (Previous winners must wait 90 days to win again!)

Birthright Needs Your Help

On Mother’s Day weekend, Birthright sells roses at area parishes as a fundraiser for the essential work they undertake. Your help is needed to make this project a success. On Friday night 5/6, starting at 5:00PM, volunteers are needed to prepare the roses that will be sold. Food and drink will be provided, and the evening will be fun and fulfilling! On Saturday morning 5/7, from 9:00AM-noon, volunteers are needed to help deliver the roses to parishes or to assist in the Birthright office with those parish representatives who will pickup roses for distribution. Again, this will be a fun and rewarding experience! Please note that other volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. For more information on this opportunity or on other ways to help, please contact Birthright of Delaware at (302) 655-7080 or via e-mail at: birthrightofdel@aol.com.
