Recognition Dinner Honors the Cream of the Crop

The CYM Recognition Dinner was held Tuesday, April 12th at Christiana Country Club. Several men and women involved in youth ministry were honored for their contribution in their parish, school, or in diocese. Congratulations to all this year's winners!

The Parish Volunteer of the Year Award for outstanding leadership in youth or young adult ministry was presented to a number of volunteers who were nominated by their parish's Youth Ministry Leadership Team. This year's winners are: Thomas Kelly – Immaculate Conception, Tom Cinderella – Our Lady of Fatima, Beverly Morris – Resurrection, Barbara Serbu – St. Joseph – Middletown, Kathy O’Toole – St. Mary Magdalen, Siobhan McDonald – St. Mary of the Assumption, Gloria Flores – St. Paul’s, Jesus Morales – St. Michael the Archangel, Gabriela Reyes – St. Catherine of Siena,

The St. John Bosco Award is presented to those who have been involved in youth ministry for at least five years and who, in the estimation of the CYM Advisory Board, excel in their service, leadership, and commitment to our young Church. Nominations were sought from parishes and schools around the diocese and this year's winners are: Ruthie Patterson (Immaculate Conception, Elkton) for Outstanding Youth Ministry in Diocesan Athletics, Wayne Bunting (Resurrection) for Outstanding Youth Ministry at a Parish and in the Diocese, Chris Hamill (St. Thomas the Apostle) for Outstanding Youth Ministry at a Catholic School in the Diocese and Joan Przywara (Catholic Committee on Scouting) for Outstanding Youth Ministry in Scouting.

The Pro Deo et Juventute Award (“For God and Youth”) is sponsored by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and is presented to those who, in the estimation of the CYM Advisory Board, model gospel values, witness a commitment to the faith and the Catholic Church and demonstrate a capacity for leadership in and service to youth ministry in athletics, catechesis, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, justice and service, parish youth ministry, or young adult ministry. Nominations were sought from all parishes and schools and this year's winners are: Elaine Little - Resurrection and Fred Perella - St. Mary of the Assumption.

The highest award CYM presents is the Father John Sheehy Award. This award is presented to the person who, in the estimation of the CYM Advisory Board, best models the attitude and service of CYM's founder, Fr. John Sheehy, who began CYO as an athletic organization in Wilmington's East Side in 1932. This award is not presented annually, rather it is only presented when the board or staff wishes to recognize someone has changed the face of ministry in our diocese. This year, the Father John Sheehy Award was presented to Joe McNesby, who has served as the CYM Athletics Program Manager for nearly 16 years.

Quotable

Let us regard those children over whom we have some authority as our own. Let us place ourselves in their service. Let us be ashamed to assume an attitude of superiority. Let us not rule over them except for the purpose of serving them better. – St. John Bosco

Quick Quiz
Pope John Paul's papacy lasted 26 years but his predecessor's lasted only shortly more than a month. Still, the pontificate of John Paul I wasn't the shortest. Can you name two popes who served less time? Be the first to email CYM with the correct answer to win. (Previous winners must wait 90 days to win again!)

Birthright Needs Your Help

On Mother’s Day weekend, Birthright sells roses at area parishes as a fundraiser for the essential work they undertake. Your help is needed to make this project a success. On Friday night 5/6, starting at 5:00PM, volunteers are needed to prepare the roses that will be sold. Food and drink will be provided, and the evening will be fun and fulfilling! On Saturday morning 5/7, from 9:00AM-12:00, volunteers are needed to help deliver the roses to parishes or to assist in the Birthright office with those parish representatives who will pickup roses for distribution. Again, this will be a fun and rewarding experience! Please note that other volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. For more information on this opportunity or on other ways to help, please contact Birthright of Delaware at (302) 655-7080 or via e-mail at: birthrightofdel@aol.com.
